Description

The Finale area offers numerous and varied routes and walks, suitable for both experienced walkers and tourists who want to see something other than just the beach. Those who leave the coastal strip behind and set foot in the narrow valleys beyond can still find untouched nature, even if the presence of man, who has laboriously reclaimed the steep landscape here, is always noticeable.

The history of Finale began millions of years ago and can be read in the typical natural stone here, a limestone full of marine sediments. Over thousands of years, water has eaten into these rocks, creating a landscape of plateaus, valleys, steep rock faces, hills and caves.

Today, Finale is an environment rich in biodiversity. The tree and plant species, some of them endemic, change along the way from the coast to the hinterland. Close to the sea, we come across dense forests of pines and holm oaks, while in sunnier areas, the excellent-smelling shrubs of macchia vegetation (strawberry tree, juniper, broom and aromatic herbs) predominate. At higher altitudes, chestnut and ash trees populate the fertile valleys. The richness of the local flora is complemented by a very diverse fauna.

Marco "Thomas" Tomassini (1971) began climbing in the Finale area in the 1980s. His passion for mountains and rocks first led him to caving and then to climbing. He soon began to set up climbing gardens, especially around Finale. Between 1993 and 1996, he was a teacher at the S.S.I. (Italian Speleological Federation) and then also worked as a sport climbing teacher for the U.I.S.P (Italian Sports Federation) and C.A.I (Italian Alpine Club).

Finale and the rocks here became his favorite area for climbing and over the course of 20 years he climbed more than 500 routes here, alone or with others. In July 2007, he published his first climbing guidebook "Finale by Thomas" with the publishing house Le Mani Edizioni... a kind of "professional curriculum". In 2010, his second guidebook "Finale...non solo mare" was published with the same publishing house, describing facilities beyond the usual hotels and hostels.

His constant commitment to setting up climbing crags was recognized by Salewa, who added him to the local "Salewa People". In 2011, after an accurate mapping of the climbing crags around Finale, the guidebook "Finale Climbing" was published by Versante Sud.

"On foot through Finale" is his fourth guidebook, made from a new passion; the search and discovery of trekking tours in the Finale area.
