Trollkids Review: Hiking pants, jacket and merino shirt for kids – put to the test

4 minutes read

Trollkids. That sounds like Norway, with its fjords, endless fells, and Scandinavian weather. The fact that the brand logo with the Norwegian flag is a manufacturer from Germany may come as a surprise at first glance.

On closer inspection, however, Trollkids is also based on a founding story often found in the outdoor industry: the idea for the brand was born during a tour that the later founders took with their families through the Norwegian mountains of Jotunheimen.

Buying Trollkids for My Daughter

Trollkids children’s clothing has been on the market since 2011. I discovered the brand in the fall of 2016 when I was looking for an excellent softshell jacket for my nearly two-year-old daughter. Attracted by the design and price, I decided to make a larger purchase, and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality, functionality, and practical features. I was especially impressed by the flexibility of combining Trollkids 3-in-1 jackets with other vests and jackets from the manufacturer.

This positive experience has continued over the past eight years. While my daughter wondered why she never seemed to outgrow her rain jacket, I was happy with each new order’s reliable quality and fit. As a result, we have come to know and love a wide range of Trollkids children’s clothing.

How Do Trollkids’ Children’s Clothes Size Up?

Trollkids is one of my favorite brands for children’s clothing because their garments are true to size. New Trollkids’ clothes fit well if I buy them in sizes that match or are slightly above my children’s current height.

For example, A jacket in size 104 fits from a height of 100 centimeters and still offers enough room to grow.

In terms of width, I would classify Trollkids as average. My children have a narrow to standard build. Most Trollkids pants and bottoms offer a width adjustment option at the waist, making them easy to adjust for slim children.

I know which size fits, and my daughter likes the style: there are no negative surprises with Trollkids. The model is currently 141cm tall and wears a size 140 cm.

Trollkids Hammerfest Hiking Pants Put to the Test

The Trollkids Hammerfest trousers are lightweight yet robust hiking trousers for children. They are made mainly from lightweight, quick-drying polyamide fabric with robust, elastic softshell inserts on the knees and seat for freedom of movement and durability.

Key Features:

  • Robust, elastic inserts
  • Quick-drying
  • Width adjustment at the waistband

As usual with Trollkids, the Hammerfest hiking trousers have an elastic waistband with an integrated width adjustment using button elastic bands, making them easy to adjust for narrower children.

The tester finds the trousers “very comfortable,” praising the lightweight and movement-friendly material combination.

Merino Wool: Trollkids Sandefjord T-shirt in the Test

The Sandefjord merino T-shirt from Trollkids is made from a wool-modal fiber mix (70 percent wool, 30 percent modal). Modal is a synthetic fiber made from natural, renewable raw materials and is silky soft, ensuring the T-shirts are not scratchy.

Key Features:

  • Soft material made from merino wool with Tencel
  • 180 grams per square meter
  • Temperature-regulating and odor-inhibiting

The material is a bit thicker and more robust than adult merino shirts from other manufacturers. My daughter loves the comfortable feel and the girly design, with cropped sleeves and a pretty mandala print.

The Hammerfest hiking trousers from Trolkids have two side pockets and a zipped pocket on the thigh.

Trollkids Halsafjord Jacket in the Test

The Halsafjord Jacket is a lightweight, breathable synthetic fiber insulation jacket with stretchy waffle fleece inserts on the sides and under the arms. It provides a good balance of thermal insulation and breathability.

Key Features:

  • Lightweight synthetic fiber insulation made from recycled polyester
  • Stretchy waffle fleece inserts
  • Very light
  • Ripstop outer material

The jacket is lightweight, warm but not too hot, quick-drying, and offers excellent freedom of movement. It is ideal for more than just sporting activities and can also be recommended as a transitional jacket.

Our Experience with Trollkids

Trollkids specializes in functional children’s clothing with an excellent price-performance ratio. All three items of clothing tested are well-designed to offer optimal functionality, freedom of movement, and robustness for children.

As a mother of two, I have been impressed by the high quality and durability of Trollkids’ clothing for eight years. The resale value and second-hand demand for Trollkids products are also high.

For the young reviewer, two things are essential: the look and comfort of the clothes. This has never been a complaint with Trollkids’ clothing. On the contrary, we love wearing these clothes for hiking and many other occasions.
